Chihayafuru Premise:
Chihayafuru manga is authored by Yuki Suetsugu. It has been releasing its chapters in Kodansha’s Be Love – a manga that is released monthly and targets women – since 2007 and also won Kodansha’s Manga Taisho award. Chihayafuru is a popular manga with over 16 million copies in rotation.
Chihayafuru is based on the Japanese competitive sport of Karuta. Young Chihaya developed a deep connection to the sport and it was her way to befriend Arata and Taichi. Their childhood was spent playing the game together.
Years later, Chihaya still cherishes those memories and gets better at the game. Arata has moved away and is depressed due to his grandfather’s death. Taichi is in love with Chihaya but can’t confess yet. Chihaya forms a Karuta club in highschool and she aims to attain the title of Queen!
Through Karuta, Chihaya, Taichi and Arata’s fates are intertwined. They all harbor growing feelings for each other. What does fate have for these young and dedicated minds?
Chihayafuru Season 4 Release Date:
There is no official announcement or news about Chihayafuru Season 4 release date. The third season ended in Winter 2020. Given how there were more than 5 years in between the second and third seasons, it is hard to predict Season 4. But we can expect the third season to get released in 2022.
VAP has quit being the Producer and was replaced by Kodansha. Nippon Television Network will keep funding new seasons, along with Nippon TV Music too. Another new producer, TC Entertainment is also in the fray. As usual, Sentai Filmworks will be the Licensors.
The Studio will probably be Madhouse. This studio has excelled over a wide range of series, creating masterpieces such as Hunter x Hunter, Monster, and Kaiji. Chihayafuru is one of its most popular and incredibly successful projects and another of its project One Punch Man Season 3 will be releasing soon as well. Madhouse will definitely return to make Chihayafuru S4.

Plot:
Currently the manga has 44 volumes in rotation. So there is absolutely no shortage of source material for Chihayafuru Season 4. Season 3 adapted the story up to Volume 26. In fact, the way it ended, many fans are eager to move on to the manga.
Following Taichi’s confession and consequent defection from the Mizusawa Karuta Club, Chihaya sees bad days with Karuta. Her feelings are all over the place and they’re affecting her game. She has the new challenge to collect herself and get back into form.
Taichi tries to move on after the rejection. He has to get over Chihaya and how selfishly she acted with him. His relation with Meijin solidifies and he has to improve in order to move on with his life. He makes a strange new acquaintance!
Arata on the other hand has his own confession planned. He too opens a Karuta club to meet Mizusawa club at the upcoming tournament. His life has its fair share of challenges and he tries to solve them while aiming for the Meijin position.
Episodes:
Just like the previous seasons, Chihayafuru Season 4 is expected to have 24 or 25 episodes. It is debatable whether the two cours will be split or not, but we are leaning on non-split. It will continue airing over 2 seasons, whenever it airs.
Also, no trailer has been released as of yet for the fourth season.
Cast:
The main cast has been very consistent and their performances have been praised a lot. In fact, this is one of those anime, where the voice acting is extremely important. Given the numerous poem recitals, very talented actors have been recruited.
- Seto Asami will reprise her role as Chihaya. She is known for Death Parade and Bunny Girl Senpai. She also has a main role in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen.
- Miyano Mamoru will return to play Taichi. He’s known for his roles in Ajin, Bungou Stray Dogs, and Aoi Bungaku.
- Terasaki Yuka will be back to play Arata. She played the extremely popular character Itachi on Naruto Shippuden. She also played the lead in Inazuma Eleven.
- Many others like Kayano Ai, Ohara Takashi and Nara Tooru will return too.
